What's a cooperative?

As a member-owner of an electric cooperative, you are a part of what makes the cooperative difference!

Electric cooperatives are private, autonomous electric utilities owned by the people they serve. As a cooperative, Roanoke Electric is owned by you, our member-owner.  There are more than 900 electric cooperatives across 47 states that provide service to 42 million members like you.  So how did cooperatives come into existence?  The video below will tell you our story.

Cooperatives are so special that we believe in promoting the interest of the member-owners we serve by following these 7 cooperative principles:

  1. Voluntary and Open Membership
  2. Democratic Member Control
  3. Members' Economic Participation
  4. Autonomy and Independence
  5. Education, Training, and Information
  6. Cooperation Among Cooperatives
  7. Concern for Community
